Abstract
Groundwater is the primary source of drinking and irrigation water in rural areas of India. However, the increasing use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture has become a major cause of groundwater contamination. The present study entitled “Integrated Assessment of Nitrate and Pesticide Pollution in Groundwater of Sihora Block, Jabalpur District (M.P.)” was conducted to assess the extent of nitrate and pesticide contamination in groundwater and to examine its relationship with agricultural practices. The study was based on the collection and analysis of groundwater samples from selected villages of Sihora Block. Information regarding fertilizer and pesticide usage was collected through field surveys and interviews with farmers. Groundwater samples were analyzed for nitrate concentration and pesticide residues using standard laboratory procedures. Statistical techniques such as descriptive statistics and correlation analysis were employed to interpret the data. The findings revealed that nitrate concentrations in several groundwater samples exceeded the permissible limits prescribed for drinking water. Pesticide residues were also detected in groundwater sources, indicating the influence of intensive agricultural activities. A significant positive relationship was observed between fertilizer application and nitrate concentration, as well as between pesticide use and groundwater contamination. The results suggest that excessive use of agrochemicals has adversely affected groundwater quality in the study area. The study concludes that groundwater resources in Sihora Block are vulnerable to nitrate and pesticide pollution and require regular monitoring and effective management. Adoption of sustainable agricultural practices, integrated nutrient management, and integrated pest management can help reduce groundwater contamination and ensure safe water resources for future generations.
