Violence against women exists across the country, transcending boundaries of culture, class, education, income, ethnicity, and age. While much of society perpetuates violence against women, the reality is that violations of women's human rights are often sanctioned under the guise of cultural practices and norms, or through misinterpretations of religious tenets. This constitutes one of the most widespread human rights violations, denying women and girls their right to equality, security, dignity, self-respect, and fundamental freedoms. Domestic violence occurs across all groups and cultures. Various studies have revealed that misunderstandings between spouses, infidelity, economic disparity between men and women, dowry demands, an indifferent attitude from in-laws, infertility, etc., are common causes of domestic violence. Based on a sample of 150 respondents selected from Satna city, this study examines the socio-cultural causes of domestic violence against rural women in Satna. A stratified random sampling technique was used to gather information from women who were victims of domestic violence. For the current study, an explanatory research design was used. This paper provides useful insights into the relationship between gender inequality and discrimination as root causes of violence against women, and identifies the socio-cultural causes and nature of domestic violence against rural women in Satna.
