Abstract

This research paper explores the depth and complexity of the role of social media in the contemporary political campaign: it can be analyzed in terms of the functionality of social media in relation to communication between the candidate and the voter, campaign organization, and the broader democratic discourse. This paper will claim that social media platforms, including X, Facebook, and TikTok, have radicalized the political environment by disrupting traditional media and allowing direct, real-time interaction between the political candidate and the electorate. The main results include the effectiveness of social media in mobilizing grassroots and the effectiveness of micro-targeting as a strategic tactic to deliver personalized campaign messaging, which may give novices a possible cheaper avenue to visibility. Nonetheless, the paper is also rather critical on the nature of the challenges with it, such as the tendency of the platforms to establish polarizing echo chambers, the massive volume of misinformation and disinformation being spread quickly, and ethical issues about the privacy of data. In the end, the paper summarizes that even though social media offers essential resources to the modern political organization and interaction, its uncontrolled utilization is a major threat to the democratic process, and the way to address it is a balanced solution that includes media literacy and responsible use of the platform.
