Introduction

Yue Fei (1103–1142) is remembered as one of China’s most iconic heroes ,a general whose courage, discipline, and moral integrity made him a symbol of unwavering patriotism. Born during the Southern Song dynasty, he dedicated his life to defending his country against invading forces of Jin dynasty, becoming both a martial arts legend and a nationalist hero.


Martial Arts Mastery

  1. Yue Fei is celebrated in folklore as a master of Eagle Claw (Ying Zhao Quan) and an inspiration behind Xingyi Quan, two of China’s most famous martial arts.
  2. His training emphasized strength, agility, precision, and moral discipline, qualities he also instilled in his soldiers.
  3. He founded the Yue Family Army, known for being exceptionally skilled, highly disciplined, and loyal soldiers who would rather die than harm civilians or betray their oath.
  4. His martial arts skill was legendary, combining hand to hand combat, spear techniques, and strategic battlefield brilliance.

Patriotism and Loyalty

  1. Yue Fei’s guiding principle was Serve the country with utmost loyalty” (精忠报国), tattooed on his back by his mother as a lifelong reminder.

  2. Prime Minister Qin Hui, who sought peace with the Jin, falsely accused Yue Fei of betraying his own country.
  3. Influenced by Qin Hui, Emperor Zhao Gou ordered Yue Fei’s arrest and execution in 1142, ending the life of one of China’s most loyal generals.
  4. His death transformed him into a martyr of loyalty, a symbol of righteousness standing against corruption and betrayal.

Legacy and Statue Story

  1. Yue Fei’s memory is immortalized at West Lake, Hangzhou, where his statue stands proudly, honoring his bravery and unwavering loyalty.
  2. Before his shrine, the statue of Qin Hui stand humbly, where visitors traditionally spit to express their hatred.
  3. His life story blends history and legend: a martial arts hero, a fearless general, and a patriotic, whose courage inspires generations.
